Capri, an island in the myth without equal

The island of Capri is one of the most picturesque and most visited of the Campania region. Its beauty and fame are known from ancient times when the ancients were linked to the myths of Odysseus and the Sirens and still attracts many visitors who make its breathtaking views, the ultimate destination.

The island is karstic, separated from the mainland by a narrow, and has a number of reliefs including that of Anacapri which is the principal. The sea from which emerges is particularly deep, the coasts are steep, rugged and rich in caves, among which the most famous is the Blue Grotto, but what is most striking, overlooking the sea, are the famous Faraglioni, small rocky islets from the most varied forms, which seem to emerge from the deep blue waters and pointed toward the sky. The bradyseism, that is the continuous rise and fall of the tides, also present in the Grotta Azzurra, means that Roman remains a time on the mainland, now almost completely submerged, you can check to see the water.

Capri by the Greeks and the Romans was the island of the goats, to this must be his name. The Greeks colonized and became a possession of Naples, then the Emperor Augustus, who was visiting the island, flourished a dry branch and did everything possible to get from Naples in exchange for Ischia. Even the Emperor Tiberius fell in love and made it his refuge by building more houses, not twelve, according to the Latin authors, in fact, evidence of its presence remains today its luxurious villa dedicated to Jupiter, a delightful self-imposed exile, which continued to rule the empire. At the end of the empire Capri was not immune from the invasion of the Vandals, and even later by that of the Saracens who caused the inhabitants, as happened in other cities of Italy, to take refuge in the highest point of the island between the citadel walled and Castiglione in a place impenetrable, difficult to reach and with an excellent view of the sea, to detect incoming enemies. The island then passed under Lombard rule and later Norman until the Angevins, who founded the great monastery of St. James, he did not return to its former glory.

The famous resort of Capri began in mid-800, with the rediscovery of the fascinating Blue Grotto; thus became the Mecca of the Grand Tour of writers and artists of international renown who described the effects of light and the play of light within changing the cave. Today the island’s architecture exhibition in typical houses “in time”, the construction types used by the Romans and the Byzantines, related to the particular shape of the terrain and the difficulty of finding wood and water: the water is still in fact a well quite rare and precious, because the island does not have its own sources and is supplied with drinking water tankers coming from the mainland. The island consists of two municipalities, each with its own administration: Capri and Anacapri, and has always been known rivalry between their respective inhabitants.
